How to use the reading ruler

Paste or open your text in the tool above. Move the pointer over the preview, drag on a touch screen, or focus the preview and press ↑ / ↓. Choose a band one to four lines tall, an underline or a spotlight. Adjust the colour, dimming and overlay strength to your preference. Full-screen reading uses your browser’s full-screen mode; press Escape to exit.

Evidence for coloured overlays is limited and mixed; some readers simply prefer them. They are not a treatment for dyslexia. Griffiths et al. (2016), The effect of coloured overlays and lenses on reading: a systematic review of the literature, found no robust evidence supporting their use for reading difficulties.

Printable ruler guide

Print this guide, then cut a strip of card along the outline. Place it beneath a line of printed text and move it down as you read. Ask an adult for help with scissors when appropriate.
