Dyslexia Font for Google Docs

Google Docs can only show fonts from its own library. Lexend and Atkinson Hyperlegible are in it; OpenDyslexic is not. Preview your text below, then follow the steps.

DOCX and copied text keep the font name. The computer that opens them needs the font installed — use “Download font”.

Add Lexend or Atkinson Hyperlegible to Google Docs

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Click the font menu in the toolbar (it usually says Arial) and choose More fonts at the top of the list.
  3. Search for Lexend or Atkinson Hyperlegible and click it so it gets a tick, then click OK.
  4. Select your text (Ctrl+A, or ⌘+A on a Mac) and pick the font from the font menu.

The font now appears in your font list in every Google Doc you open with the same account.

Paste text from this converter

  1. Choose Lexend or Atkinson Hyperlegible in the converter above and adjust the size.
  2. Click Copy formatted text.
  3. In Google Docs, paste with Ctrl+V (⌘+V).

The font and size usually come across. Docs ignores extra letter and word spacing, so set spacing in Docs itself (see below).

Make the whole document easier to read

  • Line spacing: Format → Line & paragraph spacing → choose 1.5 or Double, or Custom spacing.
  • Space between paragraphs: in the same menu, use Add space after paragraph.
  • Background colour: File → Page setup → Page color. Cream or light blue are popular choices.
  • Make it the default: after styling normal text, go to Format → Paragraph styles → Normal text → Update “Normal text” to match, then Options → Save as my default styles.
  • Read aloud: with ChromeVox or the Select-to-speak feature on Chromebooks, or the speech tool in this converter.

What about OpenDyslexic? It is not in the Google Fonts library, so Google Docs replaces it with a standard font when you paste. To read in OpenDyslexic, use this converter, download a Word file with Download DOCX and open it in Word with the font installed, or use a browser extension that changes how pages display on your own computer.
